Accessing SIS

Admin access to the Student Information Service (SIS) requires users to connect via 3270 software. Users must also be connected to Campus VPN (see section below).

Windows

MSU officially supports and has site licensed a popular TN3270 emulator for Windows called OpenText (formerly Hummingbird) HostExplorer. See Installing Required Software to Access the MSU IT Services Mainframe for more information.

Mac OS

Limited support is available for MacOS users. See TN3270 Emulator for OS X - TB13713. This emulator will NOT work on Mac OS Catalina (10.15) or newer. To run this software:

  • Run it on Windows
  • Run it on macOS 10.14 or older

Campus VPN

A Virtual Private Network allows remote workstations to connect to MSU’s network as if they were located on campus. If you are working remotely, you may need to log into MSU’s VPN for full access to the network.

Connecting to MSU’s VPN

Faculty, full-time staff, retirees, trustees, and students can log into the Campus VPN service using their MSU NetID at new.vpn.msu.edu.

An override may be requested by a sponsoring faculty or staff member for Campus VPN access for temporary/on-call employees, vendors, affiliates, and other NetIDs associated with university business.

When is it necessary to connect to Campus VPN?

Not everyone will need to connect to Campus VPN.

To determine if you need to connect:

  1. Test your application without the VPN.
  2. If your application does not work, connect to the VPN and test again.
  3. If it still doesn’t work, contact the IT Service Desk at ithelp@msu.edu or (517) 432-6200.

The following list of examples will help you determine whether or not to use the VPN:

  • Never required for:
    • External MSU and college websites
    • Avaya IX SIP
    • Spartan 365
    • Zoom
    • Microsoft Teams
    • EBS
    • Athena EMR
  • Always required for:
    • MSU E-Data Warehouse
    • MSU FileShare
    • Mainframe SIS
  • Always required (MSU IT):
    • In general, if you work for MSU IT and access things in the Data Center, you will likely need the Campus VPN to work remotely
    • SEP Management Console
    • Quest Active Roles
    • SolarWinds

Requesting access to the VPN

If you are unable to connect to Campus VPN, you can file an eARM to request access.

  1. Go to earm.itservices.msu.edu
  2. Check VPN towards the bottom of the list
  3. Click Next
  4. In the text field, begin typing the last name of the user requesting access
  5. Click Add
  6. Click Next
  7. Choose Add for the Base option (this applies to most users; if not, read the descriptions for more information)
  8. Enter the business need in the Comments section
  9. Click Save
  10. If the information is correct, click Submit All Requests

Computer Best Practices

  • Make sure your personal firewall is turned on.
    • Learn more about configuring Windows firewalls and MacOS X firewalls.
Control
  • Perform regular operating system, software, and app updates. These updates often include security patches.
    • Learn more about Windows and MacOS X operating system updates.
    • Learn more about enabling automatic Windows software updates.
    • MSU Tech Store, in room 110 of the Computer Center, can also check your operating system and software updates.
  • Install antivirus and antispyware software. Also consider anti-malware.
    • Schedule daily antivirus updates and scans of your computer and mobile devices.
    • Learn more about recommended downloads and patches.
    • Antivirus and antispyware software can be purchased for your computer at the MSU Tech Store in room 110 of the Computer Center at an educational discount.
  • Upgrade to the latest version of your browser and take advantage of the security features available.
    • Some browser security features include site pinning, safe browsing, and auto updates. These features can protect against phishing and malware attacks.
    • Investigate the built-in security features on your mobile devices.
    • Learn more about security features in Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, and Chrome.
    • Make sure you are keeping the software and antivirus protections on your computer up-to-date. View the SafeGuard Your Devices page for more information.
    • The laptop computer must be equipped with virus protection and firewall software, which needs to be installed and running prior to connecting the laptop computer to the MSU network. If you need virus protection, MSU full-time faculty and staff members may download EndPoint Protection (SEP Anti-Virus) for use on their personal and home devices.

Coronavirus Phishing Scams

In times of crisis, opportunistic individuals sometimes take advantage of these topics to play into fears, uncertainties, and doubts and attempt to get people to do things they normally might not do.

You might see websites or links shared that claim to have more information on coronavirus, or suggest people you know have been infected, all in an attempt to get you to click on something malicious.

Here are some suggestions from MSU IT and the Federal Trade Commission:

  • When receiving emails, please look carefully at who it comes from.
  • If the material seems suspicious but is from a recognizable name, call the person to verify before clicking on links.
  • Websites claiming to be a map of virus locations are a common hoax.
  • Beware of scams related to selling fake products, and fabricated emails, texts and social media posts used to steal money and personal information.
  • Watch for emails and posts promoting awareness and prevention tips but also asking for donations to victims and providing advice on unproven treatments.
  • Be alert to scam “investment opportunities.”
  • Ignore online offers for vaccinations.

Some of the most common scams are described below. It is best to rely on official government and other reputable websites for information. Follow university updates and information at msu.edu/coronavirus.

Fraudulent Cures and Treatment

According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), 'There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or cure Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)—online or in stores.' Any website or email that claims otherwise is a scam.

Fake Charities

If someone wants donations in cash, by gift card, or by wiring money, don’t do it. See the FTC's How to donate wisely and avoid charity scams.

Misinformation

Beware of emails and social media postings that claim to be from experts. For the most up-to-date information about the coronavirus, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Phishing

The U.S. Secret Service has reported a number of phishing scams related to the virus. People may receive a phishing email claiming to be from a medical/health organization that links to fraudulent sites where people are asked to enter their email, password, and other identity information. These attachments contain malware.

Tracking Maps with Malware

Attackers are circulating links to malicious websites disguised as COVID-19 maps on social media and through misleading emails. When you visit one of these sites, you may be prompted to install an applet. The applet then infects your device with malware that steals data, such as login credentials and banking information. Do not install unknown apps and applets. Stick to verified COVID-19 tracking maps (like this one from Bing) and double-check the URL of linked websites before clicking.
